Arnab Goswami Arrested: Is democracy's 4th pillar in danger?
By Priti Kumari
MUMBAI: On Wednesday morning, Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami and 2 others have been arrested from his residence in Mumbai for abetting the mother-son duo of Concorde Designs Pvt Ltd to commit suicide, in 2018.
The suicide case of the interior designer, Anvay Naik and his mother Kumud Naik has already been closed in April 2019. But Arnab's arrest created chaos in the media sphere. People dubbed it as Maharashtra government's retaliation to the Arnab & team's truth-unveiling media coverage in the SSR's case. While the Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh informed that in May 2020, Anvay Naik's daughter met him and adjourned him to reopen the case.
In May 2018, the mother-son duo was recovered dead, which the police suspected as suicide. On basis of the autopsy report, it has been presumed that Kumud Naik was strangulated by her son, who later committed suicide. From the mishap-area, police retrieved a suicide note, written by the Anvay Naik, alleging the 3 companies' owner of not clearing the dues which made him debt-prone and further instigated him and his mother to take such terrifying step. The suicide note divulges the that Arnab Goswami of Republic TV, Feroz Shaikh of IcastX/Skimedia and Neetish Sarda of Smartworks had to pay 83 lakh, 4 crores and 55 lakh to him or his interior design company. Henceforth, Raigad police charged the three accused with 'abetment of suicide' under Section 306 of the IPC. As mentioned earlier, the case has been completely closed.
However, the rearrest of Goswami has been entitled as 'Undeclared Emergency', Attack on Freedom of Press' and 'Selective Outrage' and the Union Minister Prakash Javadekar stated that the "fascist and Emergency mindset" is on display in Maharashtra. It is indispensable to highlight that the Mumbai Police charged Arnab's wife and son and two others for physically assaulting a police official.
This year India has slipped two-steps and ranked 142nd out of 180 countries, in an annual report of Paris-based Reporters Without Borders which ranks countries on basis of press freedom. It is quite unfortunate that with the surge in the crime rate, the world also witnesses an increment in the attacks over the journalists.
In 2018, a prominent Saudi Arabia journalist named Jamal Khashoggi was assassinated for some mysterious reason. There are a number of such unresolved cases which dwindled with the due course of time. Therefore, as far as Arnab's case is concerned, we hope that the truth may win i.e., SATYAMEV JAYATE.
