A month ago Indian hockey captain Manpreet Singh was tested positive for Covid-19 along with defender Surender Kumar, Jaskaran Singh, Krishan B Pathak and drag-flicker Varun Kumar after returning to the national hockey camp at the Sai south centre in Bengaluru. Initially, all five of them were tested negative but due to safety concerns, they were kept under quarantine.
"They have come together with the team and are doing what others are doing. They are 2-3weeks behind schedule and started at a slow level but they are now close to the level of other players(in terms of fitness)", Reid said during a webinar organized by hockey India. The Australian said that all the players will be fully fit by 4-5weeks and will have full training and internal matches but international matches seem distant. "It is a very serious disease, you may think you're fine but in reality, it's otherwise. So I was pleased by the tests and the treatment ", he added.
When specifically asked about the current condition of the six players, he said, "We are doing testing again this week along with the others and we're reasonably happy but it still seems like a long way to achieve the full fitness level." Men and women national camp has resumed from August 19 at the sports authority of India centre in Bengaluru. The treatment and training with players have been very sensitive and are handled with the utmost care and professionalism as they are vulnerable to major injuries. Things have been going well for the Indian team but international matches are nowhere in the picture as of now.
