Movie Review: Gunjan Saxena - The Kargil Girl
Cast: Jahnvi Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi, Vineet Kumar Singh, Manav Viz, etc.
Director: Sharan Sharma
Producer: Karan Johar, Hiroo Johar and Apoorva Mehta
Biopics are the latest trends in Bollywood. Amidst the hate towards Jahnvi Kapoor for being a product of nepotism, the movie Gunjan Saxena proved that she should not be taken lightly. It is a film which represents the challenges and difficulties of a female air force officer who saved many lives in the Indo-Pak war of 1999. This film does not show blatant patriotism or generic romantic love story. It shows the real journey and struggles of Gunjan Saxena in becoming a pilot sans the typical Bollywood flavour.
Gunjan Saxena is the first film of director Sharan Sharma. He has uniquely presented the film. There were many fine details which showed the working of the Indian Air Force and the fight scenes looked realistic. Jahnvi Kapoor, as usual, looked very innocent in the movie. The acting of her eyes is what drew the attention. She does not have a lot of dialogues, but her eyes do all the talking.
Pankaj Tripathi did full justice to his character. The display of the father-daughter relationship is priceless. He was seen supporting Gunjan in all her life’s troubles. No doubt that he was her idol. However, the role of Gunjan’s mother was not effectively displayed. The character of Gunjan’s brother depicted the brutal reality of the society regarding biasness against women. The film very delicately displays how Gunjan fought against all such factors to fulfil her dream of becoming a pilot.
The film is very sensitive and devoid of all the Bollywood drama. All the actors did a splendid job, especially Jahnvi Kapoor. The film will make you feel the struggles of women in men’s world. Gunjan Saxena is a worth watching film.
