A 9-year-old child was sold by his parents in the Odisha's tribal district, Malkangiri. They wanted to remarry and he was creating hindrance in their plans. He was the only obstacle who was stopping them from moving ahead in their lives, so they sold him.
The boy was identified as Basudev and his parents wanted to separate and remarry. To get rid of the burden the couple allegedly sold him to a villager to start their life to marry their partners. The problems for Basudev didn't end here. The villager took him out of the school and forced him into cow herding and household chores. He was mentally tortured and was only given food when he finished all the work.
He was unable to bear the torture so he ran off to the nearby Anganwadi centre. An Anganwadi worker named Jayanti Khara spotted him and gave him the necessary help. After three days when the people who had bought Basudev came to know about him, they reached the Anganwadi centre to get him. They got into a verbal fight with Jayanti Khara and on hearing that the villagers came to her rescue. They also informed the local administration.
On inquiry, it was found that Basudev also had a younger sibling and he was also sold to another person but the reason was not clear. Sukanti Biswal of the Child Helpline team said, “We were informed that a child named Basudev was sold by his father. We reached there and inquired about the matter. We rescued him and handed him to the Child Welfare Committee.”
Basudev’s younger brother named Jagannath was later rescued from Siraguda village where he was also being engaged as a goat tender. Ashish Kumar Bhoi, Maithili block development officer (BDO) said, “We can shift him to his closest relative in case he wants. Otherwise, we will move him to Malkangiri and take care of his education and other needs. We will also try to contact his parents and investigate the matter.”
