“Racism is a plague that needs to be seared at the root”-Sasha Johnson.
By Ankita Mohanty
A new political party inspired by the renowned Black Lives Matter movement is on the rise and is supposedly contesting for seats at the next General Election.
The face of TTIP (Taking The Initiative Party) is Sasha Johnson-a 26-year old BLM leader. The 26-year-old in question is a youth and café owner who has whipped crowd frenzy in the recent protests attracting massive attention. Ms. Johnson who calls herself ‘Oxford’s Black Panther’ was seen wearing camouflage trousers, a black beret, and a stab-proof-style vest when she disclosed her plans for TTIP. She said that the group was ‘not just a party for black people’ and would also represent the working class. TTIP has been registered with the Electoral Commission. So far, it claims to ‘create real change in communities across the UK by setting the agenda in government’. Although Ms. Johnson has been prominent during demonstrations in London and Oxford, her role in the party isn’t clear.
Even though she has been quite impressive in her demonstrations, we can’t dismiss the fact that she has compared police to the Ku Klux Klan and brushed off ethnic minority politicians Priti Patel, Sadiq Khan, and David Lammy as ‘tokenistic’.
In her recent interview with MoS, she said that she passionately believes in equality. She states that people need new politics, where racism and race crime is dealt with swiftly and robustly. Racism is a plague that needs to be seared from its roots, she mentions. She has put her complete faith and trust in TTIP.
While it could have been s great proposition where the black community gets enough representation and a voice, it’s slowly taking a spiralling turn. With degrading and racist remarks being delivered from both sides, it feels Sasha is fighting for racism through racism.
